The Pouilly-Fuissé appellation, in southern Burgundy, covers 800 hectares, including 194 hectares of Premiers Crus since 2020. Production is concentrated around Chaintré, Fuissé, Solutré-Pouilly and Vergisson, dominated by the famous Solutré and Vergisson rocks, limestone spurs rising to 495 metres.
The Premier Cru ‘La Maréchaude’ is situated on the clay and limestone slopes of the Roche de Vergisson, at an altitude of 350 metres, with a south/south-west exposure. The very stony, deep soils are made up of grey-blue marl from the ancient Jurassic period. This terroir, with its wide temperature range, allows the Chardonnay grape variety to express itself to the full.
The grapes are gently pressed to obtain high-quality juice, then settled for 12 to 24 hours in temperature-controlled vats. After racking, the must ferments in stainless steel vats at 16-18°C with selected yeasts. Two-thirds of the way through fermentation, the wine is transferred to oak barrels, 40% of which are new (French and American), to bring roundness, smoky and spicy notes. The wine is aged in wood for 14 months on fine lees to bring length and structure as well as subtle woody notes.
The ideal weather conditions in Burgundy in 2023, characterised by a favourable spring, a hot summer with cool nights, moderate rainfall and an early autumn harvest, played a key role in the high yields and exceptional quality of the grapes at harvest time.
The white wines are distinguished by their elegance, complexity and liveliness. Subtle aromas of white fruit, citrus and floral notes add to their remarkable freshness.
The red wines are powerful and well-balanced, with aromas of red and black fruit, as well as spicy and mineral nuances. The silky tannins add an elegant structure, promising harmonious ageing.
In short, these are expressive, fruity wines with very fine aromatic profiles.
